This is Guardbot, a surveillance robot that's able to manoeuvre on any terrain, even having the ability to swim. The device comes in a variety of sizes, ranging from as small as 5 inches to a model that is 7ft in diameter. 

Guardbot is fitted with two surveillance cameras, a batter that can last for 25 hours, microphones and GPS, allowing it to be controlled via satellites as well as remotely. 

It's currently still in development and the military are looking into using it for future deployments.

We could have been on Mars 30 years ago. At the peak of the Apollo era in the early '70s, NASA was already planning its next step into the unknown.

Its plans included building multiple space stations, continued trips to the Moon, and the first crewed mission to Mars by the 1980s. Can you imagine watching astronauts walk on Mars the same time the walkmen came out?

But NASA never sent humans to Mars in the '80s. And here we are 30 years later, still dreaming of the possibility. But the reason isn't necessarily a matter of technology or innovation. It actually comes down to politics.

As a government agency, NASA's goals are determined by the Executive Branch. Since its inception, NASA has served under 12 presidents. And it was clear near the start that not every president would support NASA equally.

By the end of Nixon's administration in 1974, NASA's budget had plummeted from 4% of the federal budget to less than 1%. Fully-funded Apollo missions 18 and 19 were abandoned along with Apollo 20.

At the same time, Nixon pulled NASA's focus away from the Moon and Mars and instead toward low-Earth orbit. His parting gift was to sign into effect what would eventually become NASA's Space Shuttle program.

Peter Diamandis: "So what's happened throughout all of space history after the Apollo program was over was to start, stop, start, stop, cancel. President comes in like Bush comes in to go to the Moon, back to Mars and next president comes in and cancels that. The agency is unable to sustain consistent funding to do anything."

It wasn't until the Space Shuttle Program was nearing retirement that a crewed mission to Mars was finally considered and funded by a US president.

George W. Bush, in 2004, announced:

"We will give NASA new focus and vision for future exploration. We will build new ships to carry man forward into the universe to gain a new foothold on the Moon."

As a result, NASA's Constellation Program was born. Never heard of it? That's because it was canceled a few years later. It aimed to send a crewed mission to the Moon in 2020 and land the first humans on Mars by the 2030s.

By the time Obama was sworn in, the Constellation Program was behind schedule and over budget. One year later, Obama canceled 100% of the program's funding.

"All that has to change. And with the strategy, I'm outlining today it will." -Barack Obama in 2010.

Obama shifted NASA's focus from sending people to the Moon and Mars to, ultimately, just Mars. In the process, he asked Congress to increase NASA's budget by $6 billion over the next 5 years.

As a result, NASA launched its "Journey to Mars" initiative in 2010, with the goal to send humans into orbit around Mars by the early 2030s. And, until recently, NASA was on track, more or less. Then, this happened.

“President Trump has launched the National Space Council and at the council’s inaugural meeting in October, we unanimously approved a recommendation to instruct NASA to return American astronauts to the moon and from there to lay a foundation for a mission to Mars.” -Mike Pence in 2017

Oddly enough, the space policy under Trump and Obama look nearly identical, save for 63 words. In those 63 words, Trump's administration has shifted the focus once again to a Moon-first, Mars-later initiative. 

NASA isn't new to this. It's learned to recycle old projects to fit new missions. For instance, the Orion capsule was first developed for Constellation and has since been redesigned for the Journey to Mars.

But even that can't prevent the inevitable changes NASA programs now face under the new president.

"We're also going to realign the organizational structure to best meet this new exploration focus. I've asked Stephen Jurczyk the current head of space exploration to lead and effort to design a new organizational approach." -Robert M. Lightfoot, Jr. in 2018

As NASA pushes on, a new possibility has grown on the horizon. Privately-owned space companies like SpaceX also has its sights set on the red planet.

Diamandis: "The scientists and engineers at NASA are amazing and they've done extraordinary things. But they're risk aversion...That doesn't allow us to do new and novel things that are on the edge. Doing anything big and bold in space is hard and it's risky. So, it's entrepreneurs taking the risks these days, willing to put everything on the line."

The race for Mars is on. While NASA has closely partnered with SpaceX and other privately-owned space companies in recent years, ultimately, NASA may not be the ones who write the next chapter in human space exploration.

This company is changing the way we see prostheses. Open Bionics is a UK-based start-up tech company. Its mission is to create affordable 3D printed prostheses. They are about 30 times cheaper than other prostheses on the market.

They operate using sensors attached to the skin to detect muscle movements. The muscle movements control the hand and open and close fingers.

Say hi to the A7 security robot, one of the newest robots from Knightscope. Knightscope builds robots they hope will predict and prevent crime. Their K5 robot went viral when it had a little mishap by falling in water. The new A7 is a multi-terrain robot that moves like a crab. It's intended for patrolling large areas like an airfield and can go up to 3 mph. It will be shipped as a beta prototype in early 2018. Knightscope says their bots have already helped catch criminals, but they don't fight back against humans. They can scan license plates, use lasers, alert security guards and are equipped with thermal cameras. Watch your back, the A7 may be watching you in the future.

This studio floats under a bridge. The project is from furniture designer Fernando Abellanas. The secret bridge studio is in Valencia, Spain. Getting to the workspace takes some ingenuity. To get to the studio, you ride in a cart operated by a hand crank. It's a metal and plywood box that travels under the bridge.

Everything else is already attached to the wall. The doors to the studio close for privacy, or sleeping. The studio was not officially sanctioned by the city. Abellanas plans on creating more spaces in unused places.

We took the Tesla Model 3 out for a test drive. The Model 3 will be the least expensive of the Tesla models, with the most basic version starting at $35,000. The one we drove had a few upgrades, like a glass dome roof and some wooden interior details. It goes for $57,500. Following is a transcript of the video.

So, here we are, Ben and Matt from Business Insider in the Tesla Model 3. This is the only Tesla we really haven't driven extensively at this point because it's so new. We picked it up in Manhattan. We've shot over to New Jersey so we can play around with things like autopilot, which is on now. This is the car driving itself. Very snappy acceleration, pretty good handling.

Just from an enthusiast point of view, it's not a boring four-door mass-market sedan. It's exciting. It's a good looking car. It is a Tesla so it has all that brand power, car of the future. Very minimalist interior, takes a little bit of getting used to. But it's striking. I think a lot of people are gonna like it. The central touch screen here controls almost all vehicle functions. So, you do need to get used to that. But, it's not gonna be unfamiliar to anyone who's been in a Tesla.

This particular vehicle is $57,500. It's not the $35,000 entry-level mass market Tesla that we've been talking about. We're sitting in the upscale version of the car. They're not even making the cheaper version of this vehicle yet. So, we're getting the best possible impression of the car we can get. We're getting nice seats. We're getting a nice leather-wrapped steering wheel. You have the nice open-grain wood here in the front. You have the beautiful, giant, panoramic roof, which doesn't open.

My immediate reaction is the complete package is very compelling. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than a Model S that might be $100,000 or a Model X SUV that could get up to around $150,000. If you want an electric car that has a lot of range, this car has about 300 miles of range on a charge. If you're just commuting, you'd be able to drive it around quite a bit during the week before you'd have to plug it in.

I think I kind of like the whole package. It has a trunk in the rear end of the car. Then, you've got a the or front trunk in the front. So, you actually get some SUV functionality. You can cram a lot of stuff into the car. So, you're not really giving up the extra cargo holding ability you would have with a SUV by buying a sedan. This is a lot of fun to drive.

SpaceX launched its most impressive rocket yet on Feb. 6, the Falcon Heavy. The launch was a brilliant success. It sent Elon Musk's Tesla roadster into space! But not everything went according to plan.

SpaceX wanted to land 3 rockets that day. But only 2 made it back to Earth in one piece. The Falcon Heavy is a beast, fueled by 3 main parts. Two booster rockets on the side and one core stage in the center.

Each part runs on 9 engines. That's 27 total engines it takes to lift this rocket to space. The two side boosters landed at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The center core was supposed to land on a drone ship in the ocean. But it missed the mark by 328 feet and crashed into the Atlantic instead.

Now we know why.

Rockets save a little fuel in their tanks for landing. It fuels the engines that fire to slow down the rocket. But two-thirds of the central core's engines didn't fire on landing. Six days after the crash, Musk tweeted the reason: "Not enough ignition fluid to light the outer two engines after several three engines relights. Fix is pretty obvious."

Crashes like this aren't new for SpaceX. In fact, it released a video of all its fails back in 2017. SpaceX is famous for learning from its failures to fix them the next time around. On the same day, Musk revealed more news. 

SpaceX is currently building a second drone ship that will sail off Florida's coast. The two ships will be there for ocean landings of Falcon Heavy's side boosters. There is at least 2 more Falcon Heavy mission scheduled for 2018.
